I'm like the guy in the song (or, rather, the guy in the song is like me). Sure, most of the time I'm OK in prayer. I can usually sound pretty holy and use all the right "sacred" terminology and all that. ​ But there are times when I want to (no, need to) get deeper in my intimacy with God---and I'm not very good at doing that with honesty or with a sense that I've covered all that I mean to express. I suspect most of us are like that.

In one very rare time, while I was trying to "put pen to paper" (actually, fingers to keyboard) to write a song, these words came out and onto the page. I don't want that to sound like vudu or some sort of intense spiritual experience---that's not at all how I remember it. It was just, well, natural, I suppose.

Anyhow, I hope you will find these words might convey your own thoughts about our wonderful Jesus, who didn't have to do what he did. It couldn't have been either easy or necessary for him to die such a gruesome and painful death for someone like me, let alone permit me to see above my own pettiness to be able to grasp his favor and respond to it. I hope you can... and have---or will.
